6. CHECKING OF ELECTRIC METERS

6.
 CHECKING OF ELECTRIC METERS

Many people are complaining that their electricity meters are running fast. There is no meter testing agency in Delhi. Hence people have to approach private power distribution companies to get their meters tested. People had been complaining that the private power companies deliberately fitted faulty fast running meters so that they can earn more money through levying of hefty bills.
People of Delhi were already suffering due to the rise in prise of basic commodities like vegetables and gas. They did not want to pay for the electricity they did not consume. AAP assured to help them by getting their meters checked and replacing the faulty meters.
Discoms will be brought under RTI and their accounts will be made more transparent.

WORK DONE IN DELHI REGARDING CHECKING OF ELECTRIC METERS

As soon as he came to power in Delhi, Kejriwal gave directions to Deputy Commissions (Revenue) to collect applications from people who have been complaining about fast running meters. Around 10,000 meters will be selected and tested to see whether they are faulty and running fast. If these meters were found to be faulty, the Delhi government will check all meters in the capital and faulty meters will be replaced.
Kejriwal assured that an independent meter testing agency will be setup in Delhi to test the fast running faulty meters.
Kejriwal also consulted IIT-Delhi and the Delhi College of Engineering to come and test the electric meters. He wanted to find out whether the faulty meters were installed purposely by the private power distribution companies to make more money.
In May 2012, Kejriwal had started a non-cooperation movement against hefty power bills. At that time he had told the people not to pay electricity bills. After becoming the CM, Kejriwal announced that the AAP members who had not paid the bills since last one year need to pay only 50% of the amount. Rest will be paid by the Delhi government. This will benefit around 24,000 people who had supported Kejriwal. He also said that the criminal cases filed against the power consumers who had supported him will be withdrawn.
Kejriwal also announced a mobile number to which people can send SMS regarding power outages in their area so that he come to know if there are any discrepancies. He also asked discoms to put up scheduled power outrages on their website: http://www/delhisldc.org.
