9. PAKKA HOUSES FOR SLUM DWELLERS

9.
 PAKKA HOUSES FOR SLUM DWELLERS

Everyone knows the situation in slum areas. Imagine the thatched houses, bad roads, no drainage, no water supply, no electricity, constant fighting between people living there, etc. AAP promised to provide the people living in jhuggi jhopri clusters (JJCs) with pakka houses. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) tried to demolish JJCs in December 2013 without providing pakka houses to the people living there. But AAP leader Manish Sisodia stopped them from doing so. If he had not intervened, many people would have become homeless.
Many JJCs have been demolished in the past by DDA without caring about the future of the people living there. The bulldozer appears suddenly and starts demolishing the JJCs. People desperately try to save their precious belongings and valuable documents.
AAP assured that long term housing policy will be planned so that low cost housing will be available in large numbers to prevent slums from coming up in the future.
Streets in present slums will be repaired. Community toilets will be constructed. Public services like water supply, waste management and sewage network will be provided.

WORK DONE IN DELHI REGARDING ALLOTMENT OF PAKKA HOUSES FOR SLUM DWELLERS

Kejriwal put brought out the problem of slum dwellers while addressing the Delhi Legislative assembly. The juggis of the slum dwellers will not be demolished until a solution regarding the rehabilitation and resettlement is found. He said that they will be given plots or flats in the same area where they are currently residing. The residents will be relocated to transitory accommodation; flats would be constructed on cleared land and eligible residents will be allowed to take possession of the flats allotted to them. If this process was not possible, permanent relocation will be undertaken.
